Sex Offender Information

Monterey County Megan's Law

Background

California's Megan's Law is named after seven-year-old Megan Kanka, a New Jersey girl who was raped and killed by a known child molester who had moved in across the street from the Kanka's - without their knowledge. Megan's parents embarked on a national crusade to change federal and state laws to allow for community notification of released sex offenders.

Viewing Information

Viewing of the Megan's Law Database for all of Monterey County takes place at the Monterey County Sheriff's Department. The database is also available on the Internet from the California Department of Justice using the link below.

The computer database containing registered sex offenders is available for viewing at all
three Sheriff's Stations and is available to the public Monday, Wednesday and Friday,
between 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.


The Program

Individuals over eighteen years of age may view the information after presenting a valid California Identification Card and signing a form explaining the statutes governing the use of Meagan's Law information.

  • The database may be searched by name, county of residence, or zip code. Searches by City or address are not permitted.
  • The database contains photographs, physical descriptions and offenses which the registrant was convicted.
  • The data base does not provide addresses of registered sex offenders.
  • The database is available on a first come, first served basis.
  • Viewing time may be limited based on the number of persons wishing to view it. Normally, the wait to view the database is short.
