Incident: Armed Robbery
Report #: 13-020768
Date: Friday, 2/15/2013
Time: 4:34 PM
Location: 1714 Burlington Ave-Steinbeck Elem.
Two 12-year old students were playing basketball on the school courts when they were approached by a 14-year old male on a bike. The suspect was armed with a semi-auto pistol and demanded the victim's cell phones. Both victims turned over their iPhones and the suspect fled. The victims reported a subject on campus with a gun to school staff. There was an after-school program being held in the cafeteria / multi-purpose room and the school was immediately locked down with about 100 students inside. The lockdown lasted about 25 minutes and was lifted after officers determined that the suspect was no longer in the area. The suspect was described as wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with a red design on back, black bandana with a white design and riding a black and red bike. No injuries were reported and there is some belief that the gun used was a replica bb-gun but at this point, the case is being investigated with the presumption that the firearm was real.
Responding officers praised the efforts made by school officials in the actions taken. All students present on campus were already in the cafeteria and the lockdown occurred immediately upon receiving the report. All other classrooms were already locked as school had concluded for the day and the only students present were attending the after-school program. Several parents arrived at the school after being notified and school officials did a fine job of organizing the parental response and subsequent reunification.
