My neighbors keep a rooster in their backyard. Is this legal?
No. The Salinas Municipal Code prohibits any fowl or livestock to be kept as pets. This includes pigs, goats, sheep, chickens, ducks, etc. Roosters are especially bothersome because of the noise they create and the fact they are sometimes used for cockfights and gambling.

Location: 18000 block Hoover St.
SPD officers along with Salinas Fire Department responded to a structure fire in the 18000 block of Hoover St. The two occupants in the residence included an elderly female and her granddaughter. They were safely evacuated. An alert neighbor noticed black smoke and fire emitting from the attached garage and side of the house. The neighbor contacted the residents and led them to safety. Fire arrived and doused the fire. Nobody was injured and a damage estimate was not immediately available.
This incident is being investigated as an arson due to unspecified information gathered at the scene. The investigation continues.
