Incident: Attempt Murder of Peace Officer, Car Jacking, Robbery

Report #: 13-071109

Date: Saturday, 7/20/2013

Time: 9:15 PM

Location: Natividad Creek Park

A 35-year old female and 39-year old male were parked at Natividad Creek Park when they were robbed at gunpoint by 3 males. Cash and personal property were taken from the male victim and the female's vehicle was stolen. Salinas Police officers spotted the victim vehicle turning onto Kimmel St. from N. Sanborn. The suspects parked on Kimmel St near Beech St. and two of the three suspects immediately exited. One suspect was armed with a semi-auto handgun and fired directly at the officers but the other suspect who was out of the car was in the line of fire and was shot by his accomplice. The officers were not injured. Due to several conditions at the scene, officers did not return fire. Both suspects fled on foot but the third suspect was trapped in the backseat of the car because the child safety locks had been enabled. He was arrested without incident and found to be 17 years old. The suspect that had been shot initially fled but returned to the scene. He was not compliant with orders from the officers and fearing that he was armed, a K9 was deployed. The suspect, Juan Boyzo (18) was apprehended by the police dog and taken into custody. An exhaustive search was conducted but the third suspect who is believed to be the shooter eluded capture. He is considered armed and extremely dangerous. Boyzo was airlifted to a bay area trauma center and is listed in critical condition as a result of the gunshot wounds. Salinas Police detectives were called in and took over the investigation. The 17-year old suspect was booked into Monterey County Juvenile Hall on numerous felonies including Robbery, Car-Jacking and gang enhancements. Boyzo is on a police hold and will be booked into Monterey County Jail on his release from the hospital. Detectives are currently working several leads in an effort to identify the third suspect and Salinas Police urge anyone with information to contact the Watch Commander at 758-7250.
