My neighbors keep a rooster in their backyard. Is this legal?
No. The Salinas Municipal Code prohibits any fowl or livestock to be kept as pets. This includes pigs, goats, sheep, chickens, ducks, etc. Roosters are especially bothersome because of the noise they create and the fact they are sometimes used for cockfights and gambling.

Juan Mejia (22) and a 20-year old female aquaintance were both intoxicated and engaged in a physical fight. Mejia had recently found a tiny kitten that was only a couple of weeks old and was holding the kitten during the fight. During the altercation, Mejia struck the female in the face with the kitten, killing the kitten instantly. Mejia was arrested and booked into Monterey County Jail for cruelty to animals and parole violation.
