My neighbors keep a rooster in their backyard. Is this legal?
No. The Salinas Municipal Code prohibits any fowl or livestock to be kept as pets. This includes pigs, goats, sheep, chickens, ducks, etc. Roosters are especially bothersome because of the noise they create and the fact they are sometimes used for cockfights and gambling.

An officer on patrol observed a Toyota Corolla driving erratically in the area of Alvin Dr. at Linwood. The officer attempted to effect a traffic stop on the vehicle but it refused to yield, leading officers on a slow speed pursuit throughout north Salinas. The vehicle finally stopped at Arcadia at Pescadero Dr. and the driver, Julian Lopez (37), quickly exited his vehicle and came towards the officer. Lopez refused to obey commands from the officer and took a fighting stance. Lopez was tased and placed in custody.
A right front passenger (29) was detained and found to be in possession of an open container, he was cited and released.
Lopez exhibited symptoms of intoxication and was found to be driving under the influence. Lopez' blood alcohol content was later determined to be approximately three times the legal limit. Lopez was arrested for evading and driving under the influence.
When officers stopped Lopez they also discovered a three year old child in the back seat. The child was not injured and was later released to the custody of his mother.
Lopez, who was also found to be on parole, was transported to county jail where he was booked on charges of child endangerment, driving under the influence, evading and violation of parole.
