The Salinas Police Department will be conducting a DUI checkpoint on Friday, August 21st. The checkpoint is part of the Avoid the 20 Task Force of Monterey and San Benito Counties. The checkpoint is part of the DUI Summer Campaign.

DUI checkpoints promote public safety, deter drunk drivers, and educate the public of the dangers associated with drinking and driving. "The checkpoint focus is not to arrest drunk drivers," said Sergeant Gerry Ross. "The focus of the checkpoint is to reduce collisions caused by drunk drivers and prevent the tragedy and devastation DUI crashes cause. Don't get me wrong. If someone is drinking and driving we will do everything in our power to arrest them and put them in jail, but our goal is to prevent people from drinking and driving in the first place."

The Avoid the 20 Task Force funding is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration who reminds everyone; Report Drunk Drivers! - Call 911.
