Location: Abbott Street and Harkins Road

A 53-year-old male was walking across Abbott Street e/b at a location approximately 1/2 mile south of Harkins Road. There is no crosswalk in that area. A Chevy p/u was n/b in the #2 lane when the driver saw the pedestrian directly in front of him. The driver swerved to the #1 lane in an attempt to miss the man but clipped him with the passenger side mirror. The man was still on his feet when a Toyota traveling at about 50 mph struck him on the legs, causing the man to strike his head on the windshield.  The pedestrian broke the windshield before he went over the Toyota landing in the middle of the #2 lane. A Freightliner semi truck then struck and dragged the pedestrian about fifty feet before he fell from the semi. The case is under investigation by the Salinas PD Traffic Unit. The name of the victim is being withheld at this time pending notification of family. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. This is the eighth fatal collision of the year. The fourth pedestrian fatal.
