Petronio Yasay, 79, was riding his mountain bike e/b on Beacon Hill Drive. The preliminary investigation showed that Yasay ran the stop sign before crossing Constitution Blvd. Maria Serrano, 37, was driving s/b in the #1 lane of Constitution Blvd. in her 2000 Chevy Suburban. The left/front of the Suburban struck the rear tire of the bicycle as the bicycle crossed in front of the Suburban. Yasay was thrown on top of the hood before landing in the street. He suffered a major head injury and was pronounced dead at the scene. The sun was setting directly in front of Serrano and may have been a contributing factor. It does not appear that drugs or alcohol were involved. The investigation in on going.

This is the 11th traffic fatality in Salinas this year. That ties the 11 fatalities in 2011 which was the most fatalities ever in Salinas. This is the first Bicycle vs. Vehicle fatality of the year. There have been 6 pedestrian deaths, two motorcycle deaths, one vehicle vs. vehicle death and one solo vehicle death.
