Over the past 2 1/2 years, since January of 2011, there have been 17 fatal traffic collisions in the City of Salinas. Of those 17 deaths, 8 were vehicle/pedestrian collisions (47%). Four of the collisions were vehicle/motorcycle collisions and 2 were vehicle/bicylce collisions, while only two involved vehicle/vehicle collisions. One collsion involved a solo vehicle driving off of the roadway. Because of this high percentage of vehicle/pedestrian collisions, the Salinas Police Department will try to focus more of its traffic enforcement on pedestrian violations, whether the violator be the pedestrian or a vehicle violating a pedestrian's right-of-way. The Department will also begin looking at other ways to keep pedestrians safe.
