Location: Parking lot of 1050 North Davis Road - KMART
On March 31, 2013, officers responded to an anonymous complaint of an RV parked in the K-Mart parking lot with animals inside , possibly abandoned. Once inside the officers found two small dogs locked in the RV bathroom, two chickens in a plastic container and a dog tethered to the front seat and another dog running around inside. The dogs were emaciated and the conditions inside indicated the animals were not being cared for. The animals were taken to the animal shelter. The RV was towed from the off-street parking facility as its registration was expired for approximately five years.
On April 2, 2013, Michael Rivera (27) and Veronica Meza (26) came to the Salinas Police Department to claim their property from the motor home. The were questioned , and they claimed ownership of the animals and stated the animals had been left unattended for several days. They were both arrested and transported to county jail and booked on felony charges of animal cruelty.
