My neighbors keep a rooster in their backyard. Is this legal?
No. The Salinas Municipal Code prohibits any fowl or livestock to be kept as pets. This includes pigs, goats, sheep, chickens, ducks, etc. Roosters are especially bothersome because of the noise they create and the fact they are sometimes used for cockfights and gambling.

On January 9, 2014 Detectives of the Salinas Police Department arrested Hector Martinez (31) for the stabbing death of Bobby Dean Dick . The homicide occured in the early morning hours of December 5th, 2013 at the Laurel Inn. Martinez was arrested at the Monterey County Courthouse following his appearance on an unrelated matter. He was arrested without incident.
Following an exhaustive investigation Martinez was identified as the suspect. At this time the Salinas Police Department will not be releasing any further details related to the investigation as it is ongoing. Martinez is currently lodged at the Monterey County Jail with a three million dollar bail.
