My neighbors keep a rooster in their backyard. Is this legal?
No. The Salinas Municipal Code prohibits any fowl or livestock to be kept as pets. This includes pigs, goats, sheep, chickens, ducks, etc. Roosters are especially bothersome because of the noise they create and the fact they are sometimes used for cockfights and gambling.

Officers responded to a report of shots fired. When they arrived on scene, they found Jose Maravilla-Ruiz (38) unconscious and suffering from a gunshot wound. After being transport to NMC he was pronounced deceased. A second victim was found nearby. He is a twenty one year old male. Not to be identified at this time. He suffered a gunshot wound to the upper torso. He was life flighted to a San Jose hospital where he was treated and released. The surviving victim stated that he and Ruiz were in the parking lot when they were approached by two males who asked what gang affiliation they claimed. When they told the suspects they were not gang members, one suspects began to open fire. There were numerous people in the parking lot at the time of the incident. The Salinas Police Department is asking anyone who may have information to please contact either Detective Fairbanks at 758-7322 of Detective Knowlton at 758-7442. Anyone with information can also call the tip lin at 775-4222 and 1-800-78-CRIME.
