My neighbors keep a rooster in their backyard. Is this legal?
No. The Salinas Municipal Code prohibits any fowl or livestock to be kept as pets. This includes pigs, goats, sheep, chickens, ducks, etc. Roosters are especially bothersome because of the noise they create and the fact they are sometimes used for cockfights and gambling.

On October 26, 2013, at approximately 5:31 PM, a 22 year Salinas man was driving his 2001 Lincoln LS northbound on Constitution Blvd. when the driver of a 1999 Nissan Sentra attempted to make a left turn from Las Casitas Dr. onto southbound Constitution. The driver of the Lincoln was unable to stop in time and struck the Nissan on the driver door. The driver of the Nissan, a 49 year old Salinas man, was transported to Natividad Medical Center with a multitude of injuries. Medical personnel listed him in very critical condition with life threatening injuries. They indicated the injured man would eventually be transported by ground ambulance to a bay area hospital for further treatment.
The driver of the Lincoln was uninjured and neither vehicle had passengers at the time of the accident.
Northbound Constitution Blvd. was closed for a short time and the cause of the accident is under investigation.
