My neighbors keep a rooster in their backyard. Is this legal?
No. The Salinas Municipal Code prohibits any fowl or livestock to be kept as pets. This includes pigs, goats, sheep, chickens, ducks, etc. Roosters are especially bothersome because of the noise they create and the fact they are sometimes used for cockfights and gambling.

Salinas Police Officers with the Violence Suppression Unit served a search warrant on a residence in the 1700 block of Pescadero. The resident, Daniel Morales (23) was detained and the warrant was served. Morales is an active gang member and convicted felon. Inside the residence, a stolen handgun, ammunition, cash and a large amount of marijuana was located. Morales was booked into county jail for felon in possession of a firearm, felon in possession of ammunition, possession of stolen property, marijuana sales and gang enhancements. His cash was taken for asset forfeiture.
