Date: Sunday, 11/24/2013
Time: 1:38 PM
Location: 1050 North Davis Rd. - Kmart
A Salinas Police Officer was driving through the Kmart parking lot and saw security chasing two individuals who had just shoplifted from the store, Clemente Valdez, 38, and Leiloni Ancheta, 36. The officer ordered both to the ground, and they initially complied. Valdez got up and ran eastbound on W. Laurel Dr. across US 101 toward the Black Bear Diner. Officers responded to the area. One of the officers entered the diner to see if Valdez had run inside. While he was there, Valdez came out out of the bathroom and ran towards Monroe Street. A witness noticed Valdez was located at the intersection of Monroe St. and W. Laurel Dr. He continued to run, but several motorists in the area called in to provide updated information to the officers. Valdez was eventually arrested for the shoplift burglary from KMart, resisting arrest, and several warrants. Ancheta also had warrants and was arrested for the same charges.
