My neighbors keep a rooster in their backyard. Is this legal?
No. The Salinas Municipal Code prohibits any fowl or livestock to be kept as pets. This includes pigs, goats, sheep, chickens, ducks, etc. Roosters are especially bothersome because of the noise they create and the fact they are sometimes used for cockfights and gambling.

A mother and her 7-year-old daughter were walking in the crosswalk N/B on Madeira Ave. at E. Alisal St. Catalino Mendez, 58 was driving SB on Madeira and about to turn onto Alisal. The mother said she saw that Catalino saw them and she had the right of way, so she and her daughter continued to walk. Catalino said he saw the mother and her daughter walking in the crosswalk, but thought they were going to stop, so he made a right turn and ran them over at approx. 10mph. The mother was knocked to the ground but the vehicle ran over the daughter's pelvis area. The mother was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries and the daughter was flown to a bay area hospital with serious injuries that do not appear life threatening.
Catalino had a suspended license, no insurance and a warrant for driving with a suspended license. He was booked in county jail for the above charges.
