Report #: 13-110654

Date: Thursday, 11/14/2013

Time: 3:02 PM

Location: Williams Rd. and Grandhaven Ave.

On November 14, 2013, at approximately 3:00 pm, a 32 yr. old mother and her 7 yr. old daughter were attempting to cross Williams Rd. at Grandhaven Ave. They were in the crosswalk and waited for southbound traffic to stop. The vehicles in the #2 lane (closest to the sidewalk) stopped, allowing the pedestrians to cross. The victims started to cross the street but did not notice a vehicle, going 35 mph, travelling in the #1 lane (closest to the center) was not going to stop. The driver, Mareo Viniegra (56), was unable to stop and struck both victims. The victims travelled approximately 45 ft. before landing in the center lane of Williams Rd. Both were transported to a local hospital and treated for unknown injuries. The injuries did not appear to be life threatening and at the time of this release, their conditions are unknown.  Viniegra was cited for a suspended license and released from the scene.

The accident was captured on video from a nearby store and is being released as a graphic example of the dangers of not paying attention while driving.  With the recent increase in vehicle/pedestrian accidents, the Salinas Police Department is asking drivers to be aware of your surroundings, especially when approaching crosswalks.  Pedestrains must also be aware that even if you are in a crosswalk, please be aware and look out for vehicles that may not see you.
