Location: 400 block of S. Main St. - Chase Bank Parking Lot

Officers responded to an armed robbery in the Chase Bank parking lot located in the 400 block of S. Main St. The victim (29) pulled into the parking lot intending to make a deposit from the auto parts store where he is employed. As the victim exited his vehicle, two male suspects in a green Saturn drove up alongside of him. The passenger brandished a handgun and demanded money. The victim handed over an undisclosed amount of cash and they quickly fled in a northbound direction on Monterey St.

The suspects were described as Hispanic males in their 20's wearing black hoodies and black masks.

The investigation continues and the Salinas Police Department is asking anyone with information to call 758-7321 or to remain anonymous 775-4222

Location: 500 block of Central Avenue

Officers responded to the 500 block of Central Ave at the request of a plain clothes officer who witnessed Alfredo Lopez (44) throw a brick through the windshield of a parked vehicle. The officer tried to get Lopez' to stop but Lopez walked away and ignored the plain clothes officers directions. Lopez fled into a backyard and attempted to hide. Once uniformed officers arrived they searched and located Lopez, trespassing on private property. Lopez was detained and subsequently cited for vandalism, resisting arrest and prowling.

It was not determined why Lopez vandalized the vehicle.

Distracted Driving Month Statistics

During the month of April, Distracted Driving was the focus of Salinas Police Department officers along with other law enforcement agencies throughout the state. Salinas Police Department officers issued 287 citations for cell phone violations and 60 citations for texting violations for a total of 347 distracted driving citations for the month of April. 

April 16th was designated as Zero Tolerance day and on this day Salinas Police Department officers issued 96 citations for distracted driving. Much of the funding for this project was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

During the month of May, the Salinas Police Department will be participating  in the May 2013 National Click It or Ticket Seat Belt campaign. This campaign will run from May 20th through June 2nd.

Location: 1600 block of Georgetown Way

Officers responded to a report of suspicious circumstances in the area of the 1600 block of Georgetown Way. It was reported by an anonymous person that a male individual was observed handcuffed in the garage of a residence and he appeared to be in distress. Officers arrived to investigate and heard a commotion inside the residence indicated. A female adult who came to the door stated there was a party taking place and that was the reason for the commotion. Officers conducted a welfare check. As they were checking the upstairs area, the victim (21) came towards officers and told them he had been kidnapped and assaulted  by several individuals who were still in the residence. Officers located and detained Michelle Hernandez (32), Juan Vargas (29) and Jason Jasso (32).

The investigation revealed Hernandez had called for a cab and the victim, taxi driver, arrived at the residence but Hernandez told the victim she was not ready. The victim was invited  to come inside to wait. Once inside, the victim was led into the garage by Hernandez where Vargas and Jasso proceeded to restrain the victim by handcuffing him. All three suspect then proceeded to assault the victim with a baseball bat with the victim possibly losing consciousness in the process.

The suspects then removed victim's belongings at gunpoint, including his ATM and credit cards, which they attempted to use several times at different locations while the victim was held at the residence. The suspects also ransacked the victim's taxi cab and stole property from it.

The victim exhibited obvious signs of injury which included  a broken arm, bruised ribs and a possible concussion. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment of his serious injuries.

The suspects, who where uncooperative, are known gang members. All three were transported to county jail where they were booked on charges of kidnapping, robbery and gang enhancements.

20001 VC arrest.

Location: 403 West Acacia Street

On the morning of April 29th, a 16-year-old male Salinas High Student was riding his bike to School when he was struck by an older model Ford Bronco with a red passenger door. The student suffered a chipped tooth, lacerations to his face, complaints of pain to his right hip and left hand, and a puncture wound to his leg. The vehicle description was put out to the media and the Police Department recieved several tips. One caller said the driver had dropped off kids at Mission Park School on Friday, May 3rd. On Monday, May 6, officers parked at the school and saw the Bronco drive up. They contacted the driver, Brent Adams, 20, who confessed to the Hit and Run. Adams was arrested and booked into Monterey County Jail for 20001(a) VC - Hit and Run causing injury.

There is a correction on the identity of the suspect arrested for felony driving under the influence this past Sunday. The suspect, after an argument, was starting to drive away and ran over his spouse who was running towards the vehicle. The name of the person involved in the incident is Jesus Sierra Castro (34) of Salinas. The condition of the victim remains critical with life threatening injuries and is currently in the intensive care unit at a Bay area hospital.

Location: 1500 block of Duran Cir.

Officers responded to the 1500 block of Duran Circle as Jesus Castillo ( 34 ) was reporting he had accidentally run over his wife. Officers arrived and rendered aid to the victim and detained Castillo after obtaining initial statements. The victim was transported to a local hospital and later was life flighted to a Bay area hospital suffering from serious injuries including multiple skull fractures and internal injuries. Her condition is critical and her injuries are considered life threatening.

The investigation revealed Castillo and the victim had returned home from a party where they had been drinking. Castillo and the victim became involved in an argument and to avoid further problems he elected to leave the residence. Castillo entered his truck and was starting to drive away with the victim running towards the vehicle. Castillo suddenly felt an impact and stopped to find out he had run over the victim. Castillo remained on scene and contacted police.

Officers determined Castillo exhibited symptoms of intoxication and processed him for driving under the influence.

Attempted Homicide

Location: Williams Rd. & Freedom Parkway.

Officers responded to a call of several shots heard in the area of Freedom Parkway and Williams Rd. Initially, officers were unable to locate any victims or evidence of a shooting but a short time later officers were notified of two persons arriving at a local hospital. One of the two had been wounded in the back by unknown assailants who shot at them from a vehicle. The investigation revealed the incident had taken place in the area reported earlier, Williams Rd. at Freedom Parkway.

The victim (30) told officers he and a passenger (17) in his vehicle were shot at several times by someone in a maroon colored compact vehicle similar to a Nissan Altima after a verbal confrontation at a nearby fast food restaurant. The victim was the only one struck by the gunfire and he was able to drive to the hospital for treatment. The victims injuries are not life threatening and he is expected to recover..

Stolen Vehicle Arrest

Salinas Police took a report of a stolen Cadillac Escalade from the parking lot of Mi Pueblo on E. Alisal St. Less than an hour later, an officer spotted the vehicle traveling in the area of Towt St. & Garner Ave. He followed it to Williams Rd. in front of Alisal High School. The vehicle was preparing to turn into the parking lot of the school, so it was stopped in the left turn pocket. The driver, Aaron Jimenez (25) was taken into custody and eventually booked into jail. The passenger was determined to not be involved in the theft and was released from the scene.  The school was momentarily locked down while officers took the suspect into custody.

Location: 349 Williams Rd. - Sal-Mex Bakery

Officers responded to the Sal-Mex Bakery at 349 Williams Rd. for a report of an armed robbery which had taken place.  A Hispanic male entered the business, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans, and a burgundy bandana over his face.  He pointed a handgun at the employee, which was visible through one of his sweatshirt sleeves.  The suspect took an undisclosed amount of cash and fled on foot, heading westbound on Bellhaven St.  The suspect was described as about 27 years old, 5'1", and with a slender build.  There is no further information at this time.
