Slow Down, Look Out for People Walking: September is Pedestrian Safety Month

September is Pedestrian Safety Month, and Salinas Police Department will participate in activities throughout the month encouraging the safety of people walking.

Based on data projections from the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), 7,485 people, or an average of 20 people every day, died after being struck by a vehicle last year – an 11.5% increase from 2020 and a 40-year high.

This past week, agents from the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) and Salinas Police Department conducted a Shoulder Tap Operation which targets adults who purchase alcohol for people under 21 years of age. Four Suspects Arrested in E. Bernal Dr. Homicides

of 10 shots fired on E. Bernal Dr near the intersection Maryal Dr. On arrival officers located two victims, Michael David Ramos (33) and Amanda Nicole Ferrel (30) both suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Tragically both victims succumbed to their injuries.

Decoy Shoulder Tap Operation

Agents from the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) and Salinas Police Department conducted a program called a Decoy Shoulder Tap Operation which targets adults who purchase alcohol for people under 21 years of age. Under the program, a minor (Explorers) under the direct supervision of a peace officer will stand outside a liquor or convenience store and ask patrons to buy them alcohol. The minor indicates in some way he or she is underage and cannot purchase the alcohol.

Homicide Investigation Update

On 5/31/22 at approximately 2:55pm Salinas Police Officers responded to the intersection of N. Sanborn Rd. and Del Monte Ave. on a report of a victim of a shooting. On arrival they located 29-year-old Esteban Ocampo suffering from a gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital however he died as a result of his injuries.

“Click it or Ticket” Seat Belt Safety Campaign Runs Through Memorial Day

Salinas, Calif. –Salinas Police Department reminds everyone taking a trip to visit friends or family over the Memorial Day Weekend to always buckle up and keep children in child safety seats.

This year’s Click it or Ticket campaign is from May 23-June 5. During this time, the Salinas Police Department will have additional officers on patrol actively looking for drivers and passengers who are not wearing a seat belt. This includes vehicles where children are not secured in child safety seats.

During May’s Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, Salinas Police Department reminds drivers to always look twice for motorcycles.

“Motorcycles may be difficult to spot, so being extra careful before changing lanes is always good practice,” Public Information Officer, Miguel Cabrera said. “Motorcycle riders are out in the elements and do not have the same protections drivers and passengers do.
