On 1/2/20, officers responded to 911 calls and a ShotSpotter activation of 4 gunshots on the 700 block of Towt Street.  While officers were en route dispatch advised a cell phone business had been robbed at gunpoint.  An unknown male in all black clothing and black beanie walked up to the counter demanding the clerk empty out the register, while he pointed a gun at the clerk.  The salesclerk was slowly getting the money out of the register when the suspect told him, 'you are laggin bro, hurry up” and fired a round into the ceiling.  Victim put the money on the counter and the suspect grabbed the money.  The suspect ran away down Towt Street.  The victim chased the suspect and before the suspect entered a grey or black car with tinted windows, he fired 3-4 more gunshots.  The suspect was described as HMA, mid 30's, wearing all black clothing, 5'10-5'11”, 150-160 lbs, with a beard, crooked teeth, brown eyes.

As a result of good investigative work officers were able to positively identify the suspect as 28-year-old, Jose Nunez, a known Salinas gang member.  Detectives conducted surveillance for several days ultimately seeing and identifying Nunez at an apartment on the 700 block of Williams Road. On 01/30/20, detectives wrote a search warrant for the location and continued the surveillance while the SWAT Team was called out. SWAT responded, surrounded the residence, and called Nunez out taking him into custody without incident.  Detectives located the clothing worn during the robbery, cash, and other evidence.  Nunez was booked into County Jail for armed robbery, gang member in possession of a firearm, negligent discharge of a firearm, and other charges.
