ShotSpotter detected several gunshots in the area around 1000 Block of Atlantic St. At the same time of the ShotSpotter notification two Salinas Police Officers, who were patrolling the same area, observed two teenage males running on Atlantic St. with red bandannas covering their face and carrying handguns. Officers pursued both suspects ultimately taking them into custody nearby without incident. Both handguns were recovered at the scene where the arrest took place. While investigating the initial reports of gunshots on Atlantic St., Officers contacted three victims nearby who initially occupied a vehicle on Atlantic St. before the shooting. It was determined that after a brief confrontation both suspects shot at the victims and then quickly fled the area. There were no injuries as a result of the shooting but three vehicles were found with bullet strikes. While this incident was unfolding, three area schools (Jesse Sanchez Elementary, MLK Elementary and LaPaz Middle) were put on temporary lockdown while police operations were underway. Arrested were Justin Mendoza (18) and a 17-year-old male associate. Mendoza was booked at the Monterey County Jail for attempted murder and other related felonies. The 17 year old was booked at Monterey County Juvenile Hall with similar charges.
