On September 4th at about 1937 hours, Martin Gutierrez, 44, was driving his Toyota Tundra s/b on Williams Road in the #1 lane. Arturo Duarte, 47, ran across Williams Road from east to west, outside the crosswalk. Gutierrez could not stop in time and the Toyota pickup struck Duarte knocking him to the street. Duarte suffered a broken leg and head trauma. He was life-flighted to San Jose and placed in the Intensive Care Unit. On September 26, at 1346 he was pronounced deceased from the injuries incurred in the collision. The case is still under investigation. At this point it does not appear the driver will be charged with any law violation. This is the 9th fatal traffic collision in Salinas this year. Three of the fatal collisions have involved a vehicle vs pedestrian.
