On February 11, 2017, at approximately 12:30 am, John Rodzach (39) was in the area of North Hebbron Avenue and Fremont Street, where he was shot and killed. At the time, officers had no leads, however, detectives of the Salinas Police Department continued the investigation. Detectives determined Kris Purcell (20) was one of the suspects. In October of 2018, Purcell was arrested and charged for the crime. Detectives continued to uncover additional evidence and determined Luis Atayde (19) was also involved. On April 2, 2019, Atayde was charged with murder and booked into Monterey County jail. This investigation is ongoing, and detectives would like to hear from anyone with information.
