$14.8 MILLION FROM FEDERAL GRANTS RECEIVED TO SUPPORT

TEACHER PREPARATION, YOUTH DEVELOPMENT AND VIOLENCE PREVENTION

WHAT: This press conference will unveil five separate federal grants totaling $14.8 million that will create a strong culture of student success and academic achievement. The Monterey County Office of Education, the City of Salinas, CSU Monterey Bay, community partners and school districts will discuss how this federal funding will build an integrated, collaborative, and coherent system to address the serious need of preparing a strong teacher workforce, and overcoming youth violence through positive youth development and engagement.

OVERVIEW: The Monterey County Office of Education and community leaders/partners will unveil and share details on five different grants totaling $14.8 million that will come to Monterey County to address the following:

Monterey County Office of Education Grants

? $2.6 million awarded to the Monterey County Office of Education from the U.S. Department of Education's School Climate Transformation Grant. The granting period begins October 1, 2014 and runs for five years. This grant will build the capacity of all participating schools and districts to initiate and sustain the implementation of all three tiers of PBIS in order to decrease incidences of challenging youth behavior and violence. The training in this model will be conducted by Dr. Josh Harrower, Professor and Program Coordinator, CSU Monterey Bay. Within the five-year period, 33 participating school sites in the Alisal Union School District, Salinas City Elementary School District and Salinas Union High School District will demonstrate the following outcomes: 1) continual decreases in the office discipline referrals, 2) continual improvements in attendance, 3) continual reductions in suspensions and expulsions, particularly related to drug and alcohol offenses, 4) the ability to implement PBIS sustainably and with fidelity, and 5) continual reductions in the ethnically and racially disproportionate use of exclusionary discipline practices.

? $100,000 awarded to the Monterey County Office of Education from the National Forum to Prevent Youth Violence. The granting period begins September 30, 2014 and runs for two years. This grant will support Salinas' schools in implementing PBIS, including reducing suspensions and expulsions, creating a positive school climate, and providing behavior support services to all students. Additionally, it will support the county's Positive School Climate Leadership Team, a cross sector collaborative working to align resources around common goals and to initiate the sharing of pertinent data across systems throughout Monterey County.

? $100,000 awarded from the Monterey County Office of Education from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Center for Mental Health Services. The granting period begins September 30, 2014 and runs for two years and will offer a Youth Mental Health First Aid Program to train youth-serving adults to identify and address the mental health problems and issues of Salinas' students aged 12 to 18.

California State University Monterey Bay Grant

? $8.6 million to California State University Monterey Bay from the U.S. Department of Education to recruit, train and support teachers over the next five years primarily in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) to improve student achievement. The following Monterey County school districts will be served by the project: Chualar Union School District, Gonzales Unified School District, King City Elementary School District, MCOE, Salinas City Elementary School District, Salinas Union High School District and Soledad Unified School District. This funding is the culmination of President Barrack O'Bama's Teacher Quality Partnership (TQP) grant competition announced earlier this year.

City of Salinas Grant

? $3.4 million to the City of Salinas from the U.S. Department of Justice's Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) to hire eight school resource officers (SROs) to be placed in middle and high school campuses in Salinas. The granting period is three years.
