Press Conference to Celebrate Salinas Police Department being Named the Recipient of the James Q. Wilson Award for Excellence in Community Policing

Salinas Police Department has been named the recipient of the James Q. Wilson award for excellence in community policing. The Community Policing Institute of California will present the award to Salinas PD at the annual California Police Chiefs Association Conference on March 7. The award is given once a year to California law enforcement agencies that 'successfully institutionalized the Community Policing philosophy,” according to the RCPI-CA website. Judging is done by a panel of experts who have no affiliation with any of the nominated agencies. Over the past two years, the Salinas Police Department has dedicated resources and training to public outreach.

For Salinas Police Chief Fresé, 'community policing is not a project, is a philosophy”. It is a way of providing police services by partnering with the community to address those quality of life issues that affect Salinas. It encourages police and community to participate and communicate as partners. The J. Q. Wilson award, given to one California agency each year, is named for the social scientist credited with the 'broken windows” approach to policing, which concentrates on preserving order by concentrating on quality of life issues.

There will be a press conference held to discuss the details of the J. Q. Wilson award during a short celebration with community members.

The press conference will take place on Friday March 8, 2019 at Closter Park 401 Towt St. at

3:30 pm. The public is invited to attend
