Salinas Police Department Deputy Chief  Dave Shaw to Retire

After almost 32 years with the Salinas Police Department, Deputy Chief Dave Shaw is retiring on December 21, 2018. His final day working will be December 20, 2018. Dave was born and raised in Salinas. He attended and graduated from North Salinas High School and Hartnell College. He later attended Saint Mary's College of California and earned a BS degree in Management. Dave began as a reserve police officer with the Salinas Police Department in 1987 and was hired as a full-time police officer in 1988. When Dave was hired full-time, he and his father (Lieutenant Larry Shaw) became the first father and son to work for the Salinas Police Department at the same time.

During his time at the officer rank, Dave held several assignments to include Field Training Officer, Detective, Crime Scene Investigator and Hostage Negotiator. In 2003, he was promoted to the rank of sergeant. As a sergeant, he supervised the patrol unit, the investigations unit, the community services unit and the violence suppression unit, twice. In 2011, he was promoted to the rank of commander. As a commander, he managed the patrol division and the administration division. In 2016, he was promoted to Deputy Chief. As a deputy chief, he led the patrol division and the newly formed inspection unit.

Dave volunteered in the community with the California Rodeo Association, Salinas Airshow, Monterey County Domestic Violence Council and 2nd Chance Youth and Family Services. After a rewarding career he looks forward to spending more time with his wife of 30 years, sons and granddaughters.
