Lake St. and Martella St. On arrival they located an adult male victim suffering from gunshot wounds. The victim has been identified as 18-year-old Kazia Blunt.

Homicide

At approximately 12:45 pm Salinas Police Officers responded to a report of a victim of a shooting near the intersection of W. Lake St. and Martella St. On arrival they located an adult male victim 18 years of age suffering from gunshot wounds. Officers and Salinas Fire Personnel attempted life saving measures on the victim however he succumbed to his injuries. The identity of the victim is being withheld at this time pending notification of family members. The Salinas Police Department does not have any suspect information to release at this time.

Detective Gansen Receives CPOA Award of Distinction

Detective Byron Gansen received the California Peace Officer Association Award of Distinction today for his commitment to the community as lead detective on this major investigation. The statewide awards ceremony was held this morning in San Diego at the California Peace Officers Association Advance Conference.

On October 22, 2020, a federal grand jury indicted six Salinas street gang members, charging them with racketeering, murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and additional firearms and gang-related crimes. The federal indictments were the culmination of a complex 3-year investigation initiated and investigated by Detective Byron Gansen.

“Your plate is always full as a parent, but the goal for this week is to offer parents and caregivers the time to make sure their child is as safe as possible in the car,”

Operation Black Hawk

For the past five months the Salinas Police Department Investigations Unit, the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office, Salinas Violence Suppression Task Force and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Monterey Office have been conducting an ongoing investigation into NorCal Transportation, who is suspected of operating a drug trafficking organization (DTO) with the specific intent to transport and distribute narcotics between Yuma, Az and Salinas, Ca. During the investigations it was determined that, Nor Cal Transportation was directly connected to the Sinaloa Cartel and transporting narcotics in conjunction with Norteno gang leaders.

A press conference will be held at the Police Service of Salinas Headquarters in the Community Room 312 E. Alisal St, on Thursday September 16, 2021 at 10:00 am. Interim Chief Roberto Filice, Salinas PD staff and law enforcement partners will present a report on the results of Operation Black Hawk which took place on September 9, 2021.

Suspect Arrested in 2002 Homicide

After nearly 20 years on the run, Juan Gabriel Nunez (46) has been arrested in connection with a homicide that occurred on August 8, 2002. Salinas Police Officers responded to 349 Iris Dr. on a report of a missing female and her child. When officers arrived, they contacted the child’s babysitter who told them the mother, Loretta Paluszynski had not shown up to drop off the children as she normally would. Officers responded to the residence to conduct a welfare check and located Paluszynski deceased from multiple stab wounds. The children were located and were safe.

September is Pedestrian Safety Month: Be Predictable, Look Out for One Another

As part of Pedestrian Safety Month, Salinas Police Department is supporting efforts throughout September to improve pedestrian safety and help reduce crashes and injuries.

Pedestrians are more and more at risk on the road. Based on data from the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), 2020 had the largest ever annual increase, 21 percent, in the rate at which drivers struck and killed pedestrians. In California, pedestrian deaths accounted for 27 percent of all traffic-related deaths in 2019.
